About This Tour
North to south in eight days, with the two long hops flown rather than driven. Hanoi opens the tour with the Ho Chi Minh complex, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter, and the second day boards an overnight junk on Ha Long Bay — a UNESCO karst seascape of some 1,600 limestone islands — with a cave visit, a cooking demonstration and squid fishing off the deck.
A flight south to Da Nang opens the central section: the Marble Mountains, the basket boats of Cam Thanh, and the Japanese Covered Bridge in the lantern-lit ancient town of Hoi An, then a cable car up Bana Hills to the Golden Bridge held in two giant stone hands. A second flight reaches Ho Chi Minh City for the colonial centre and a full day in the Mekong Delta.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
8 DaysArrive at Noi Bai and transfer to the hotel. A half-day tour follows: the Ho Chi Minh Complex — the mausoleum, Ba Dinh Square, the stilt house he lived in and the One Pillar Pagoda — then Tran Quoc Pagoda on its islet, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the 36 Streets of the Old Quarter. The day ends on Hanoi Train Street, where the line runs a metre from the front doors.
Drive 160 km east to Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO seascape of roughly 1,600 limestone karst islands rising straight out of the water. Board at noon and eat lunch under way. The afternoon takes in a cave, then sunset happy hour on the top deck, a cooking demonstration with the chef, dinner, and squid fishing off the stern after dark.
A tai-chi class on deck at dawn, then tea and coffee as the light comes up over the karsts. Climb one of the island peaks for the panorama and swim off the beach before an early brunch and disembarkation at noon. Transfer back to Noi Bai for the flight south to Da Nang, and check in on arrival.
A slow morning, then out at 2:30 PM to the Marble Mountains — five limestone and marble hills with caves and pagodas cut into them — and the Non Nuoc stone-carving village at their foot. At Cam Thanh, the water coconut village is worked from round bamboo basket boats. The afternoon finishes in Hoi An Ancient Town: the Chinese communal house, the Hoi Kien temple, the Tan Ky merchant's house and the 400-year-old Japanese Covered Bridge, best seen once the lanterns are lit.
Drive 35 km inland and ride the Bana Hills cable car — one of the longest single-span systems in the world — up to a French colonial hill station at 1,487 metres. The Golden Bridge is held up by two enormous weathered stone hands; beyond it are the old villas, the suspension bridge, Vong Nguyet villa, the Sakyamuni Buddha monument and the indoor rides of Fantasy Park. Buffet lunch is at an Indian restaurant on the hill. Back in Da Nang, the evening covers Han Market, the Dragon Bridge, the Han River bridge and the Love Bridge.
Fly south to Ho Chi Minh City and check in — the airport is only 10 km from the centre. An evening city tour covers the hundred-year-old red-brick Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Old Post Office that Gustave Eiffel's firm had a hand in, the People's Committee Hall, the French Opera House and the Cafe Apartment, a 1960s block whose every balcony is now a cafe.
Drive 75 km south to My Tho and take a boat out onto the Tien River, past the four islands named for the unicorn, dragon, tortoise and phoenix. On Thoi Son the group walks through pomelo and jackfruit orchards, visits a honey-bee farm for lemon honey tea, rides an auto rickshaw through the village lanes, hears Southern folk music over a fruit tasting, rows a sampan up a water-coconut canal, and finishes at a coconut candy works.
Take breakfast and check out. Free time until the transfer to Tan Son Nhat International Airport for the departure flight. Your tour ends here.
